Your Shopping App Will Lose Sales on the iPhone Duo. Here Are the Three Screens to Fix First

Posted on12 September 2026
People who spend $1,999 on a phone are the people you want in your checkout.
On 23 October they will open your shopping app on a 7.6 inch screen. They will see one of two things. Either a product grid with room to breathe, or your phone layout stuck in a small box with black bars around it and a fold running through the Buy button.
Which one they see depends on work you do in the next six weeks.
What the Duo does to a shopping app
Two screens, one app.
Closed, the Duo is a normal 5.4 inch phone. Your current layout is fine there.
Open, it gives your app as much room as an iPad. Three things follow from that.
One. Old apps get shrunk. Apple has said this openly. An app built with older tools shows up in a small box in the middle of the screen. To a shopper it reads as "this shop did not bother."
Two. The fold is a real place on the screen. When someone props the phone half open on a café table, the phone tells updated apps where the fold is. Apps that were never updated put content on top of it. If that content is the Place Order button, the order is gone.
Three. Two apps fit side by side. This is new on an iPhone. A shopper can hold your product page next to a competitor's. Your page is now being judged next to theirs, at half the width.
Where you lose money, screen by screen
The product grid. Two columns on a 7.6 inch screen means four huge tiles and a lot of empty white. Three or four columns means more products before anyone scrolls. More products seen means more product pages opened. This is the cheapest fix and the most obvious one to a shopper.
The product page. This is where the Duo pays you back. There is room for the photos on one side and the price, the size picker and the Add to Basket button on the other. No scrolling between looking and buying. Apple ships a ready made container for exactly this. A stretched phone layout does the opposite. It makes the shopper scroll past a giant photo to find the price.
The checkout. One column, in the middle, never on the fold. The phone tells your app where the fold is, so this is a small change, not a redesign. Get it wrong and someone posts a photo of your payment screen split in half.
A camera feature worth stealing
The Duo can show your subject their own face on the outside screen while someone else shoots with the good rear cameras.
Think about a clothes or glasses app with a try on feature. That is a mirror that was never possible on a phone. The customer sees the fit while a friend takes the photo.
Nobody has built the shopping version of this yet. Whoever does it first gets the screenshot everyone shares.
What doing nothing costs
Nothing about the Duo stops a purchase. The shrunk app still works.
What you lose is the margin. Someone spent $1,999 on a phone, opened your app, saw a small box, and bought from the shop whose app filled the screen.
In launch week that comparison is literal, because the Duo puts two apps side by side.
Not sure what to ask whoever built your store app? The five questions are in I Own an App but I'm Not a Developer.
What the work actually involves
| Your store app | Work | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Built natively with standard screens | rebuild with the new tools, let the grid use the space | 2 to 4 days |
| Built natively with a custom product page | the above, plus a two panel product page and a fold safe checkout | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Built in Flutter | rebuild, remove any screen size saved at startup, check the fold | about a week |
| Shopify or a website inside an app shell | the responsive CSS already adapts, but test the checkout frame | 1 to 3 days |
Most of this is the tablet layout you kept putting off. Now it has a date and a customer who paid two thousand dollars to notice.
Get the check done before 16 October
Orders open on 16 October.
Between now and then we run your store app on the iPhone Duo simulator in every position. We send you screenshots of every small box and every button sitting on the fold. Then we give you a fixed price for the three screens above.
Two working days. Paid through Upwork, so the money only moves when the work passes.
