I Own an App but I'm Not a Developer. What Does the iPhone Duo Mean for Me?

Posted on12 September 2026
You paid someone to build your app. It works. People use it.
On 23 October, Apple starts selling a phone that opens like a book. Someone will buy one, open your app on it, and see your app sitting in a small box in the middle of a big screen. Black space all around it.
Nothing is broken. It just looks old. And the person seeing it paid $1,999 for that phone.
There is no code in this article. I will tell you what is happening, what to send to whoever built your app, and what a fair price looks like so nobody charges you too much.
What the iPhone Duo is
It is Apple's first folding iPhone. It is called the iPhone Duo.
Closed, it is a normal phone. About the size of an iPhone 13 mini. Open, it is a 7.6 inch screen, close to a small iPad.
It costs $1,999 and goes up to $3,199. In India it is ₹2,99,900. It goes on sale on 23 October.
The people who buy the first one are the people who buy everything first. Early adopters. Bosses. Creators. Those are the customers you least want to look cheap in front of.
What happens to your app
Apps are built using a toolkit from Apple. Apple updates that toolkit. Your app was built with an older one, so it does not know the big screen exists.
Apple plays it safe. It shows your app at the old size, in the middle, with black bars around it. Apple calls this compatibility mode. Your customers will just call it broken.
An app that has been rebuilt fills the whole screen. An app that has been properly updated goes further. It puts two things side by side. A photo next to a price. A list next to the details. The way an iPad app does.
There is one more thing, and this one costs money.
The phone has a fold down the middle. When someone holds it half open, like a small laptop on a table, an app that was never updated can put a button right on the fold. If that button says Pay, you just lost the sale.
Five questions to send your developer today
Copy these into an email. Every answer should be a yes or a date.
- Have you rebuilt our app with the new iOS 27.1 tools? This alone removes the black bars. It is a rebuild, not a redesign. Hours of work, not weeks.
- Does our app use the big screen, or does it just stretch? Ask for a screenshot from the iPhone Duo simulator, open and closed. Apple gives every developer one for free.
- Is anything important sitting in the middle of the screen? That is where the fold is.
- Have you tested it while opening and closing the phone? Not just open, and not just closed. While it moves. That is where apps lose what someone was typing.
- What will this cost, and when will it be in the App Store?
If they say Apple has not released the tools yet, that is wrong. The tools came out on 9 September. Apple has published step by step instructions for developers.
If they send a price with no date, ask again.
What a fair price looks like
The work is the same everywhere, so here is a sanity check. Use it to judge any quote you get.
| Your app | What needs doing | Fair range |
|---|---|---|
| Simple app with lists and forms | rebuild with the new tools, let the layout use the space | a few hundred dollars, 1 to 2 days |
| Business app with booking or ordering | the above, plus a two panel main screen, plus keep the checkout off the fold | roughly $800 to $2,500, 1 to 2 weeks |
| A game, or anything that draws its own screen | all of the above, buttons placed by hand, tested at every angle | $2,000 and up, 2 to 4 weeks |
| An app built by AI with nobody to call | check what is actually in there first. Our vibe coding audit is a fixed $500 for apps under 20 screens | $500 audit, then a quote |
Two warnings.
If someone quotes you a full redesign because of the foldable, that is usually padding. Most of the work is a rebuild plus layout rules Apple already wrote down.
If someone tells you it will just work, that is also wrong. See the black bars above.
If you cannot reach whoever built it
This happens more than people admit. The freelancer moved on. The agency closed. Your friend who knows apps is busy now.
You need three things. The source code, which you should own. An Apple developer account in your name. And someone to do the work.
We do this for founders every week. A Duo check takes two days. We run your app on the iPhone Duo simulator in every position, send you the screenshots, list what fails, and quote a fixed price with a date.
You pay through Upwork, so the money only moves when the work passes. If you want someone on it every month, our packages start at $1,500.

Whatever answer comes back, by Friday you will know if your app belongs on the iPhone Duo on 23 October, or if it got left behind.
